The fog of grief was so thick she couldnât see through it, let alone navigate a path out of it. In the space of five minutes, sheâd lost everything she cared about: Jackson and her vocation. That was two weeks ago now, and the fog wasnât lifting. She should have got straight out of London and hidden at her parentsâ place in Suffolk, but she was too mortified to face them. Sheâd told them sheâd clashed with the headmaster and had to leave, but not about Jackson. Theyâd have been horrified to hear sheâd got involved with a married man, a father. Theyâd be ashamed of her.
Sheâd tried to regain some kind of perspective over the relationship. Sheâd known it was wrong, and sheâd also known it had no future. Despite the words heâd said to her, despite the magic when they were together, sheâd always known it could amount to nothing in the long term. Theyâd both been in a bubble; Hans Place had been a fairytale refuge for them to cook and goof around and make love and be normal. In hindsight, it had been a false cocoon; it couldnât have protected her from the heartache that would inevitably engulf her.
In the long days and nights following her dismissal, the most confounding part of the situation had been Jacksonâs involvement. She still couldnât believe she might have been mistaken in his feelings for her. If sheâd been a neutral third party, the whole thing would have sounded highly suspect, but sheâd been there, in their cosy little nest, with him. Sheâd sensed his need for her; each morning sheâd found his body wrapped around her, his arms clinging to her desperately. Sheâd read the message in his eyes every time heâd woken up to find her next to him. That was another thingâheâd started openly spending entire nights with her, even mid-week. If anything, heâd been in deeper than her.
The last evening theyâd spent together had been perfectly, wonderfully normal. Theyâd cooked a Thai stir-fry and caught up on the latest episode of Graham Norton on BBC iPlayer. Jackson had been full of fascinating gossip into the workings of the show and the intensive preparation its researchers did for each guest. Heâd been on it a few times.
That night, theyâd brushed their teeth together like an old, married couple and climbed into bed. Lying in his bed with her legs and arms wrapped around him, his forearms flanking her head and his mouth on hers as he moved inside her, had been an almost spiritual experience. Sheâd felt surrounded by him, consumed by him. Afterwards, she could have sworn his eyes had been wet as heâd stroked her face and whispered her name over and over again.
Fast-forward two weeks, and the closest she could get to him was watching his movies and cuddling her bear. The bear had quickly become her most treasured possession. She watched all five movies in the Adrenalin series, even though she usually hated action movies.
